Frequently Asked Questions

What is Organizational Culture?

Organizational culture is the collection of words, actions and behaviors that clarify and emphasize what is truly valued inside an organization. OIT’s culture components are Mission, Vision, and 8 Values which are posted on the OIT website.

What drives culture?

An organizational culture is driven by a shared belief in the Mission, Vision, and Values as established by leaders. It is then communicated and supported through various methods, ultimately shaping employee perceptions, behaviors, and understanding.

Why are we doing this?

Our goal is to create a unified OIT organizational culture. Culture provides an informal control mechanism, a strong sense of identity within the organization, and a shared understanding among employees about what is important.  By blending and redefining the culture and reconciling differences between them, we are working towards OIT building a common, unified platform for the future.

Why is this important to OIT?

OIT is a large complex organization that has evolved over a long period of time without a shared vision or value system.  We believe our cultural transformation initiative will unify us, strengthen our capabilities, and bring benefits such as increased trust and collaboration, comfortable conflict resolution, and more efficient decision-making.

How did this come together?

It came together by the senior leadership of OIT gathering to review and develop OIT’s Mission and Vision. With input from management teams, senior leadership identified the key core values that OIT exemplifies, as well as those that would lead the department to achieve visionary goals.

What should I expect?

You should expect clear and consistent communication from leadership. In the initial roll-out year, we will send monthly emails to all staff introducing a specific “Value of the Month” and techniques to apply this value. The conversation will continue throughout the month through team meetings in addition to the monthly All-Staff meetings. As feedback and suggestions come through, each idea will be evaluated for implementation. We will be rolling out more concrete methods for individuals to embrace these values as part of our day-to-day work. For example, we will share information on best practices for incorporating these values into ACHIEVE processes, organizational cascading goals, conducting effective meetings, running recruitments, etc.

What is my role?

Our goal for all staff is to live these values each and every day. Employees are active champions in conversations and facilitators of change through the sharing of ideas. We encourage all staff to take a part in advancing our shared values and contribute ideas through OIT’s culture hype channel. It is important to note that everything we do may not include all 8 values, but all values are equally important nonetheless. The goal is to maintain a healthy balance between these core values in all decisions that we make.

How can I participate?

We encourage you to actively participate by applying the culture components (Mission, Vision, and Values) into your circle of influence – the space that you have control. Share your best practices or ideas for improvements on OIT’s dedicated OIT’s culture hype channel. Comment on and highlight other people’s ideas that resonate with you.

What is the goal?

Our goal is to build a unified culture and a safe environment where comments, questions, and all conversations are coming from a place of curiosity and understanding. When an inquiry is raised, we welcome and even encourage asking questions such as who is the audience, what is the objective, and why is this being asked in order to promote a meaningful exchange and produce a better outcome.
